Guacamole: Fresh & Easy!
Welcome to WESTERN COOKING IN PLAIN ENGLISH VIDEOS! In this video I've shown how to make quick & easy, fully flavorful fresh guacamole using only the following ingredients and pieces of equipment:
Ingredients :
2 Ripe Avocados 2 Garlic Cloves 1/4 Red (or any) Onion Handful of Fresh Cilantro 1 Lime 1/2 Teaspoon Salt 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper Salsa (optional) Hot Sauce (optional)
Equipment :
Paper Bag (only needed if the avocados need to be ripened) Cutting Board Sharp Knife - preferably a wide bladed (chef's) knife Working Bowl Fork Teaspoon (only if you're measuring salt & pepper)
1. To check an avocado for ripeness, press the avocado skin with your thumb using a little more pressure than you would use to hold a pen firmly. If your thumb just dents the skin fairly easily, the avocado is ripe. If, however, the avocado is still hard, the quickest way to ripen it is to put it in a loosely closed paper (not plastic) bag out of direct sunlight for 2-4 days.
2. Cut the avocados completely around the seed and twist them in half. The easiest way to remove the seed is to lay the avocado seed up on the cutting board, make sure your fingers are clear and snap the blade of a knife into the seed and twist the seed out. Carefully remove the seed from the knife blade. 3. Cut the avocado halves in half again, peel the skin and put the avocado pieces in a working bowl. 4. Break two garlic cloves from a garlic bulb. Lay the cloves on the cutting board. Break the skins by laying the side of a knife on one clove at a time and pressing the side of the knife blade against the garlic clove firmly with the heel of your hand until the garlic skins break open. Then peel, chop and add the garlic to the bowl (for detailed, easy to follow garlic chopping video directions see "How To Chop Garlic" under Kitchen Essentials). 5. Chop 1/4 red (or any) onion and add it to the avocado and garlic (for detailed easy to follow video directions, see "How To Slice or Chop an Onion" under Kitchen Essentials). 6. Tear, rinse, squeeze and shake dry a handful of fresh cilantro and then chop it fairly finely like this and add it to the bowl. 7. Add the juice of 1 lime. 8. Add about 1/2 teaspoon (or as much to taste) of salt and ground black pepper. 9. Use a fork to mash and mix the guacamole until all the ingredients are completely mixed together. 10. For a little added zest, add salsa (optional) and/or hot sauce (optional) to taste.
